A Day of Rest

So two guys are attempting a worldwide experiment ... how many people can give up the use of their computer for a day?

Check out ShutdownDay.org for more.

My question, does this just mean your laptop or desktop? What about your tivo, xbox, wii, ipod, stereo, coffee machine, alarm clock, car, atm, mobile phone, ..? They're all pretty much computers in different boxes. can you avoid using all of them for an entire day? what would you do with your day? would this result in a utopia or anarchy?

I find it pretty interesting .. i'm going to see how much i can not use for the day.

what do yall think?

Streaming Movies now on Netflix

So I was surprised earlier today when I logged into Netflix to discover the availability of streaming video content over the internet! While this doesn't include very much content yet, it holds promise for the future. For subscribers to the usual dvd-in-the-mail plans, you get 1 hour of video stream for every $1 in your monthly contract. I have the 2 dvd at a time $15 plan, so I get 15 hours of streaming video a month. The quality is pretty damn good, too. It looks similar to dvd video played on my computer (albeit, it is a 4 year old thinkpad).

Netflix "watch now" currently requires windows (xp sp 2 or vista), ie6+, windows media player 9+. My standard comcast internet connection was sufficient for the stream.

I'm guessing they've got a pretty nice content delivery network (cdn) behind this thing ...

Unfortunately, Netflix itself doesn't carry much publicly available information (meaning to non-subscribers), but it appears that this faq is available:

i2i

MediaHub finally launched in Atlanta under the guise of "i2i." So far, they've only soft launched it by linking from their multimedia page, but the plan is a hard launch/marketing campaign towards the end of the month.

i2i.ajc.com

I architected MediaHub, a product of COXnet (my employer). So far, two of our four metros have launched MediaHub sites, as well as most of our community papers.

You can see my user page at i2i.ajc.com/user/tolar.

If you have any thoughts on the product, I'd love to hear them!

Beirut

So i love this band. they toe that line of old school gypsy folk & indie rock that's just so damn delightful to listen to.

Here are two new songs off their recently released Lon Gisland ep. Where their first release, Gulag Orkestar, was essentially lead Zack Condon's baby recorded in his parent's basement, Lon Gisland is recorded with the entire band, thus creating a more organic feel to it. The single off the new EP, "Elephant Gun", is essentially a continuation of the direction they began on Gulag Orkestar. The other great track here is a re-recording of the previously synthesizer-heavy "Scenic World". They've removed the electro/synth feel and replaced it with a string section that would make Jay Clifford proud.

enjoy!
